Add Alex to the wall.

Giants bring up Hinshaw, DL Valdez:

SAN FRANCISCO -- The Giants placed right-hander Merkin Valdez on the 15-day disabled list Thursday with a strained right elbow and purchased the contract of left-hander Alex Hinshaw from Triple-A Fresno.

(Via San Francisco Giants News.)

Alex Hinshaw (2006) was promoted to the SF Giants today replacing Merkin Valdez (2004). While it is bad news for Merkin,  it is always a good thing to see our kids move up. Congrats to Alex.

As Greg reports, he came into today's game and faced two batters, striking out the first and giving up a single to the second.

Wondering about the Mercury News

S.J. Giants top Visalia: "VISALIA 6, GIANTS 1   The Oaks scored two in the second inning and three in the third off Clayton Tanner and held on for the victory at Municipal Stadium."

(Via Mercury News: Baseball.)

Do they even read the stories they write? Presumably you want the headline to match the story. But if you don't care, it doesn't matter, I guess.

Omar Vizquel returns to Muni

Vizquel very close to returning: "The Giants announced on Monday that shortstop Omar Vizquel, who's creeping closer to returning from left knee surgery, will continue his Minor League injury rehabilitation assignment on Tuesday with the organization's Class A San Jose affiliate."

(Via San Francisco Giants News.)

I believe that his last visit to Muni was as a Salinas Spur in 1987. From the story, it sounds like he may play a couple games in San Jose this week. It should be fun to watch. Enjoy the game.

Brooks and Ryan move up.

While I had heard about this a couple of days ago on Greg's Defenders Blog, today Brooks McNiven (2006) and Ryan Sadowski (2005) are listed on the Fresno Grizzlies' roster. I am immensely happy for both of them! Congrats!

And as Greg points out, Paul Oseguera (2007) had his Connecticut Defenders debut tonight, going four innings and giving up two hits and one unearned run, with three walks and four Ks. Justin Hedrick (2006) got the win and Sergio Romo (2007) got his seventh save in a 3-2 win over the Trenton Thunder.

Insights into Minor League rosters.

Making The Pieces Fit: "For a farm director, putting together his organization's minor league rosters is a bit like putting together a jigsaw puzzle. Once the general manager narrows the major league roster down to 25 players, each farm director has to allocate 24 players to his Triple-A team, 24 to his Double-A squad, 25 to high Class A and 25 to low Class A. It's up to the general manager and the scouting department to acquire the pieces; it's the farm director's job to put that 98-piece puzzle together. And sometimes the pieces need to be forced into spots where they don't quite seem to fit."

(Via Baseball America.)

An interesting article, that includes a section on why the SF Giants second 2007 pick Tim Alderson made the jump to San Jose over their first pick Madison Bumgarner. It also discusses how weather differences played into the Giants sending Manny Burriss to Fresno instead of Norwich.
